Recently, Matthew Neenan shared some great insights about his choreographic process while creating Past Tense, his piece that will premiere on Parsons at The Joyce this season. Neenan said that it is essential for him to involve dancers in the creative process of building a piece. He emphasized how much he values working with Parsons dancers, whom he finds particularly receptive to how he works. He also commented on how supportive our dancers are to each other. At the same time, he admitted to a pandemic related challenge of re-working Past Tense because he made it over two years ago and, since then, some of our dancers have departed and new ones have joined us. Hardly daunted by the task, he instead praised our current company and declared that “it is his duty to make the piece for them.” We are eager to see the results of Neenan’s efforts as we experience this stunning work at The Joyce.
