Nearly 21 years ago, Parsons Dance signed a lease at The New 42nd Street Studios when Cora Cahan offered us the chance to be among the first occupants of this building that was an essential part of her incredible efforts to renovate the Times Square’s theater district. Our lease has ended, and as of this month, it is time to move on. We are grateful to Cora and her successor Russel Granet and thank them immensely for helping us thrive through the years by providing us with well-subsidized office and studio space.
David Parsons comments about the move:
The spaces where artists work can become their second homes. The actual amount of time I have spent in studios throughout my career is shocking. Four years in Kansas City starting at age 13; nine years with my mentor Paul Taylor at 550 Broadway; seven years in a loft at 476 Broadway; eight years at City Center; and twenty years at The New 42nd Street Studios. Now it’s time to move again.
We are so grateful to the leadership of The New 42 for its vision and hard work in making The New 42nd Street Studios a reality and for providing our organization with subsidized office and studio space. Where else could you ride the elevator and bump into Tina Fey or Beyoncé? Mel Brooks or Dolly Parton? Speaking of elevators, at City Center, we had union elevator operators. When we moved to The New 42nd Street, I begged Reynold Raymond, my favorite operator, to apply for the job and come with us. He did, and now he’s the Assistant Director of Buildings. Yo Rey, my man! We did OK!
We will certainly miss our friends in the building and the entire 42nd Street community.
Stay safe; we're almost there,
David Parsons
